Michael Furtman's

Seasons of the Elk

One of my most memorable mornings afield occurred in Manitoba's Turtle Mountains. While I sat in a duck blind on a cold October morning, watching the sun burn the mist from a small lake and its light dance off the heavy frost that glistened on every reed and branch, a large bull elk strode confidently onto a hillside behind me. There, as if he were lord of all that he could see, he tilted back his hoary muzzle and ripped the dawn with a piercing bugle, just like the one you just heard as this page opened. I shivered, not so much from the cold, but from the majesty of it all.

Elk are fascinating animals, as I learned while researching this complete natural history text. Did you know, for instance, that they once ranged across virtually all of North America, and that at the time of European contact, their range exceeded that of today's ubiquitous white-tailed deer? Or that, while we think of them as creatures of the mountains, elk really evolved as herd animals best suited to the open plains, where they once number in the hundreds of thousands?

Seasons of the Elk is my tribute to this grand animal. Spectacular color photos by Stan Osolinski grace the entire book. This book is six by nine inches, small enough to carry as a field guide, but big enough to do justice to the photography. And the smaller size helps keep the price down, too. It is a very reasonable $14.95.

If you love elk, you'll appreciate this book. Inside you'll learn about their breeding habits, how and why bull grow such impressive antlers, the history of their evolution and migration to North America, and just about every detail of their daily lives -- all of which, I guarantee, you'll find fascinating.
